Freshwater Pearls vs Akoya Pearls: What’s the Difference?

Freshwater Pearls vs Akoya Pearls: What’s the Difference?

Freshwater and Akoya pearls are two popular choices for pearl jewellery, but they can have very different appearances.

Akoya pearls are traditionally known for their round shapes and sharp lustre. They are generally cultured in saltwater and are often associated with classic pearl strands.

Freshwater pearls, however, offer much greater variety.

Modern high-quality freshwater pearls can display impressive lustre, smooth surfaces and beautiful natural colours. They are available in round, near-round and organic shapes, making them particularly versatile for contemporary jewellery.

Which Should You Choose?

There is no single “better” pearl.

If you love a traditional, highly uniform appearance, Akoya pearls may appeal to you.

If you appreciate individuality, interesting shapes and excellent value for size and quality, freshwater pearls can be an excellent choice.

What matters most is not simply the pearl category, but the quality of the individual pearls — particularly their lustre, surface, shape and overall harmony.
